Leadership as Responsibility: A Call to Nigerian Muslim Youth
For Nigerian Muslim youth, this message is especially relevant. Our society often sees leadership as a privilege, but Islam teaches us that it is a trust. A student leading a group project, a young professional handling clients, or even a firstborn child guiding younger siblings, all are leaders in their own spheres. Leadership is not measured by the size of the crowd you command, but by how faithfully you manage the trust given to you.
Take for example a youth corps member serving in a rural community. By taking the initiative to teach extra lessons to children, organize health talks, or even assist in mosque activities, they demonstrate leadership that goes beyond wearing a khaki uniform. Their flock may be small, but their responsibility is great.
Similarly, in the workplace, a young Muslim who shows honesty, punctuality, and fairness becomes a role model. Colleagues begin to respect not just their work ethic, but also the values they represent. That is leadership by example quiet but impactful.
Leadership is also needed in our homes and communities. With rising social vices such as drug abuse, cultism, and cybercrime, it falls upon Muslim youth to guide peers towards positive alternatives. Organizing a football match, setting up a skill-acquisition workshop, or creating an online da’wah initiative are simple but powerful ways of shepherding our flock.
In Islam, leadership is not about self-interest. It is about protecting, guiding, and uplifting others. Just as a shepherd does not abandon his sheep, a leader cannot abandon their people. The Prophet ﷺ showed us that the best leaders are those who serve with humility, compassion, and justice.
As Nigerian Muslim youth, our nation needs us to step up with responsibility. Whether in school, at work, in politics, or in everyday life, we must see ourselves as leaders entrusted with the well-being of those around us. Leadership is not waiting for tomorrow it begins now, with how we carry ourselves today.
